Creatina an Idaho Centennial Beard Growina Contest
Hair Ye! Hair Ye!
Whereas, Idaho was granted statehood in 1890 and is 100
years old and celebrating its Centennial in 1990;
Whereas, the City of Eagle and its residents are
participating in recognition of the Idaho Centennial
celebration;
Whereas, the Eagle Fun Day Festival on June 9, 1990, will
recognize celebration of the Idaho Centennial during its
many activities;
Whereas, the territory of Idaho was organized on March 4,
1863, by an act signed by President Abraham Lincoln;
Whereas, Idaho entered the Union on July 3, 1890, as the
43rd state by an act signed by President Benjamin Harrison;
And whereas, acceptable and appropriate appearance of the
period by both President Lincoln and President Harrison, as
well as by residents of Idaho territory and the state of
Idaho, included sporting a beard;
It is hereby resolved that all able-bodied residents of the
City of Eagle, Idaho, shall be required to grow a beard by
refraining from shaving for a period of 101 days commencing
at 12:01 a.m. on March 1, 1990, and concluding at 11:59 p.m.
on June 9, 1990.
Be it further resolved that an appropriate "Idaho Centennial
Beard Growing Contest" be held during the Eagle Fun Day
Festival on June 9, 1990, to recognize beards of unusual
quality and distinction with a $50 prize to winners in each
category to include:
-- The longest beard
-- The grayest beard
-- The redest beard
-- The most distinguished beard
-- The best President Harrison look-a-like beard
-- The scroungiest beard
-- And the most unusual beard;
And be it further resolved that:
-- entrants in said contest be required to appear
before contest officials to identify themselves as
being clean shaven or sporting no more than a
mustache on or about March 1, 1990;
-- that those able-bodied residents desiring to shave,
or spouses or friends of those desiring to shave, be
required to purchase a shaving permit allowing them
to do so;
-- and that those able-bodied residents unable to grow
a beard be required to obtain a "Little Shaver" pin
as exemption from this resolution.
So ordered by the Mayor by resolution of the City Council of
