Minutes - 2000 - Eagle Public Library - 08/28/2000 - Regular EAGLE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING NOTES August 28, 2000 Present: Don, Liz, Terry, Janice 1. Call to order: 3:36 p.m. 2. Agenda approved 3. Minutes of last meeting approved: Don/Liz 4. Friend's report: (Jeanie spoke to us 8/21) The display cabinet is here and put together in the lobby. Janice said that she has not seen a bill yet, she would check with Ann. --There will be a book sale in October 5. Treasurer's report—discussed how to read the tables and graphs from the city 6. Approval of bills. Liz/Don 7. Director's report ♦ Ann will be out at least 3 more weeks. ♦ Statistics—computer use steadily increases. Tracy & Sarah went to a Gates workshop and are enthusiastic about what they learned. We are probably getting 4 computers using, in part, Gates funds. ♦ Janice introduced the "Let's talk about it" program she initiated. There are 10 signed up so far. For this program, book discussions are lead by guest professors from nearby colleges. The first meeting is September 13. ♦ The summer reading program began with 400+ participants but not as many finished the program as last summer. The teen reading program was successful plus we now have an on-going teen drama group. ♦ Ada Community Library is establishing a branch library in Hidden Springs and they hope to be in a building by the fall. 8. Committee reports—Liz is not done with the Policy Manual yet 9. Unfinished business ♦ The board discussed the two people they would recommend to City Council for new board members. ♦ Completed the final discussion on the library budget. Approved: Liz/Don 10. New Business ♦ Discussed filtering of Internet accessible computers: legal issues, legal expectations, possibilities for styles of delivery, ways to keep the responsibility in the hands of the parents. Consensus is that we will not make any final decisions until the new board members can be part of the discussion and decisions. Current thought: Terry has looked at the N2H2 program which has possibilities. Parents who request Internet filtering for their children will have to make that request in person. That request would show on the screen when staff scan the patron card. They would then log that patron into a filtered or unfiltered access depending on on-screen information. When that patron logs off, the computer will default back to unfiltered access. ♦ Display case. Liz suggested that Janice formulate a policy for what goes into the display case loosely based on the Community Room policy (i.e. no sales pitch, etc.) Liz also suggested that Janice contact the historical society for the first display. 11. Other issues: Terry & Liz will attend the City Council Meeting August 29, 2000 12. Next meeting: September 18. (We may have to go to Tuesday night meetings this fall only) 13. Adjourn: Don/Liz
