Minutes - 2009 - Historic Preservation Commission - 03/12/2009 - Regular
EAGLE mSTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Meeting of March 12, 2009
Can to Order: The meeting was called to order by Commission Chair, Jason Pierce, at
6:07 p.m.
Roll Can and Introductions: In addition to Jason Pierce, Commission members Betty
Fisher and Nancy Suiter were present. Museum Curator, Laurie Baker, and Eagle City
Clerk, Sharon Bergman, also attended.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Approval of Minutes: Laurie Baker made corrections to the minutes oftbe February 12,
2009, meeting which, under the heading "Exhibits," stated that a "library employee"
helped Ms. Baker with the construction of some display cabinets. The library employee
is also a volunteer for the Museum and the work involved decorating the cabinets, not
constructing them. Under the heading, Donation Review Form, the sentence stating the
Eagle Firefighters "may be donating additional items, plus their calendar" to the
Museum should read, "have donated items..." to the Museum. Under Volunteer
Recruitment, new volunteer, Mark Pelkowski's name was misspelled. Nancy Suiter
moved the minutes be approved as corrected. Betty Fisher seconded the motion. The
motion passed.
Curator's Report: Laurie Baker spoke about the Budget Review. All capital
expenditures are now gone. Some money will still be available to her for archival
supplies but strict budgeting must prevail. She plans on appealing to the Historical
Society for some money to be used for the case displays.
Approval of Expenditures: Because of the difference in billing cycles between the City
and Staples, the Museum has had to pay $29.Iat,e fees on two occasions. See Sharon
Bergman's comment on this under NEW BUSINESS, Commission Resignations, below.
Jason Pierce moved and Betty Fisher seconded the. illotion to approve the expenditures>
The motion passed.
Donation Review Form: Seven donations were received this month. The largest was an
archival collection relating to the inception of the Eagle Senior Center. Sharon Bergman
told Ms. Baker she has further materials related to the Center available at City Hall. Ms.
Baker credits the publicity generated from her article printed in the Idaho Association of
Museum's newsletter for the public's renewed interest in donating to the Museum. Jason
Pierce moved and Nancy Suiter seconded the motion to approve the Donation Review.
The motion passed.
Eagle Auto Fest: The flyers for the Eagle Auto Fest were delivered to the Club in time
for their first show of the year scheduled for the first weekend in March. Ms. Baker
needs to reserve First Street for the show. Jason Pierce asked if the Arts Commission
should be asked to move the Saturday Market to their former space on Second Street on
the day of the Auto Show, August 29. Ms. Bergman said she would speak to the Arts
Commission regarding this.
Institute of Museum and Library Services "Connecting to Conections-- The
BooksheIr': Ms. Baker reported the application for the free reference books provided
through this program is long and complicated. Since she is currently pressed for time
with other duties, she has chosen to postpone applying until next year. The program is
available annually.
Photo Workshop Training: On March 9,2009, Laurie Baker conducted a Photo
Training Workshop for the Meridian Historical Society and its volunteers. Lila Hill, of
the Meridian Society, spread the word about the Workshop through newsletters and as a
result 18 people from all over the state attended. The Workshop was 3-1/2 hours in
length and was received enthusiastically by the participants, some of whom have asked to
visit our Museum to see the process in practice.
NEW BUSINESS
Partners Pages Book Distributors: Partners Pages is a catalogue of books about local
history in the Pacific Northwest. Ms. Baker is considering trying to market Arthur Hart's
book by advertising in this venue. There are 350 books left. Jason Pierce suggested
trying to sell them during Eagle Fun Days and the Auto Fest. Eventually the Friends of
the Library and the Chamber of Commerce may be willing to sell them. Jason also
suggested trying to sell them at Rembrandt's.
Commission Resignations: It is foni1ally noted that Gwen Sears's resignation was final
as of November, 2008, and Shari Sharpfs resignation was tendered in March, 2009.
There are now two vacancies on the Commission to be filled. Sharon Bergman noted that
Jason Pierce's term expires at the end of this month.
,
Sharon Bergman reported on the status of cha, nges to the ordinances. The Historic
Preservation Committee is to remain but its duties. Will be limited and are not entirely
clear at this time. It will now only be required to meet semi-annually or quarterly. Bills
can now be sent directly to the City Clerk's office (this will address the matter of late
payments to Staples). Lauric Baker suggested the Commission next meet on the second
Thursday of the month of June. It was agreed.
Jason Pierce announced his pending resignation. He has agreed to remain on the
Commission until at least two replacements are in place. Sharon Bergman suggested
recruitment of three commissioners be pursued at this time.
Museum Closure: Ms. Baker will be away next week. Betty Fisher will cover part of the
time she is away but the Museum will be closed for part of that time.

Adjournment: Jason Pierce moved the meeting be adjourned. Betty Fisher seconded
the motion. The motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 6:59 p.m.
