Eagle Historic Preservation Commission
Amendment to Minutes of November 13, 2008
Adjournment: Chairman, Jason Pierce, asked Ms. Baker to leave at 7:05 p.m.
Discussion, begun by Commission member, Gwen Sears, focused on the subject of the
Images of America book, (see minutes of 9/11/08, Images of America Photo History
Proposal). Ms. Sears complained that Ms. Baker seemed determined to involve herself
with the book over the objections of the majority of the Commission. Nancy Suiter
reminded the Commission that the work would be done on Ms. Baker's own time and
that she had earlier pointed out that collating the required photos was a normal part of her
duties at the Museum. (See above reference.) Discussion followed as to whether the
extra work, although performed on her own time, might tire Ms. Baker so that she would
be unable to perform her duties at the Museum effectively. Shari Sharp questioned Ms.
Baker's right to personal use of Museum photos. Nancy Suiter pointed out that copies of
the photos are available to anyone for a small fee.
The discussion topic then turned to Ms. Baker's general management style and work
habits with Commissioners Betty Fisher and Gwen Sears remarking that she spends .'all
of her time" on the computer. Nancy Suiter said that most business today is done on
computers and pointed to the volume of work Ms. Baker generated on the computer,
including manuals for the proper care of the archives, and handbooks for volunteers and
Commissioners. Countering that, Ms. Sears and Ms. Fisher said that Ms. Baker also
followed the news of the Presidential campaigns on the computer and noted in particular
her comments regarding her apparent candidate of choice. More discussion followed
with Commissioner, Shari Sharp, averring that since Ms. Baker spends many hours alone
and unsupervised in the Museum she Could be doing anything other than Museum work.
Ms. Sharp suggested she might be playfug games on the computer or taking long lunch
hours with friends.
The topic of Ms. Baker's refusing, in the view 9f some Commissioners, to fill the
Museum cases with artifacts was brought up by Betty Fisher who spoke of the inventory
she and her niece, Helen Fisher, have been doing, and said there were still many objects
that are not "duplicates of things already on display," as maintained by Ms. Baker. Ms.
Fisher made particular mention of a collection of her dresses that she felt would make a
nice display and would appeal to Museum visitors. However, Ms. Baker's offer of space
in cases devoted to displays made by volunteers was dismissed. (See Exhibits,
Commission minutes of 11/13/08.)
Councilman, Mike Huffaker, summarized the discussions by suggesting that the
Commissioners, acting in their capacities as advisors to the Curator, should make a list of
their complaints and suggestions and submit them to her in written form. There was no
immediate response to the suggestion.
Adjournment: There being no formal adjournment, the Commission members dispersed.
There was no adjournment time recorded.
