Minutes - 2008 - Historic Preservation Commission - 08/23/2008 - Special EAGLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Minutes of Special Session, August 23, 2008 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Betty Fisher, Chair pro tem, at 3:00 p.m. Roll Call: Commission members Betty Fisher, Shari Sharp, Gwen Sears, and Nancy Suiter were in attendance. Chair, Jason Pierce, participated via telephone conference call. Curator Laurie Baker was present. Unfmished Business: Laurie Baker reported receiving an email from Kelly Reed of Arcadia Publishing regarding the Images of America book. Ms. Reed said that Frank Thomason, editor of The Valley Times, wants to author the book and is prepared to begin at any time. Since authoring such publications is her particular field of expertise and interest, Ms. Baker does not want to lose the opportunity to pursue this. It was questioned whether help in co-authoring the book would allow her to proceed at this time and the suggestion was made that perhaps Shari Sharp, who already has a manuscript on Eagle's history and, in particular, a biography of her father, Orville Jackson, in progress, might assume the position of co-author. Ms. Sharp declined and Laurie Baker told the Commission she had already made such a suggestion to Ms. Reed who responded that the publisher directed their inquiries to museums and other like entities because the preference was to work with people associated with those institutions who more often had prior experience in writing material related to their fields. Gwen Sears asked what monetary benefit there would be to the Museum if we pursued this proposal now and Ms. Baker was asked to find out the amount of royalty on copies sold. At this point Jason Pierce interceded with the desire to delay the project two to three years, allowing Ms. Baker more time to devote directly to other, unspecified, Museum business after the Arthur Hart book is published. Betty Fisher moved and Shari Sharp seconded the motion to adopt Jason Pierce's suggestion. Discussion followed. Ms. Baker feared delay would result in the book being offered to someone else, thus losing the opportunity for it to be a future source of income to the Museum. She was curious to understand the sudden lack of interest in the project that had manifested since the Commission meeting in June, when everyone seemed in agreement that it was a worthwhile pursuit. Ms. Fisher responded that Jason Pierce's remarks regarding "other Museum business" prompted the change. The vote on the motion being called for, the motion passed three to one. Adjournment: Betty Fisher moved and Gwen Sears seconded the motion to adjourn the special session. The motion passed. The session was adjourned at 3:56 p.m. .~ Respectfully submittced, ~ / ~,'f ,.
