Minutes - 2008 - Historic Preservation Commission - 02/14/2008 - Regular
THE EAGLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes of the Meeting of: February ]4,2008
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jason Pierce at 5:58 p.m.
Roll Call and Introductions: Commission members in attendance were Jason Pierce, Betty Fisher, and
Nancy Suiter. Guests present were Gwen Sears and Sharon Sharp.
Also present was Laurie Baker, Curator.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Approval of Minutes: Laurie Baker corrected the spelling of the name Spradling in the minutes of
January] 0, 2008. Jason Pierce moved and Betty Fisher seconded the motion to approve the minutes as
corrected.
Curator's Report: Included with the Curator's report was the Expense Report. Ms. Baker explained
that the cost of the first, new printer remained on the report and will be removed when the replacement
printer arrives. The new printer has to be replaced because the rollers pick up ink from the newsprint and
contaminate the archival copies. The next printer will have a flat bed large enough to accommodate those
items being copied eliminating the need for the roller mechanism. Betty Fisher moved and Nancy Suiter
seconded the motion to approve the Expense Report. The motion passed.
- Arthur Hart's Book: Ms. Baker announced that a generous donation, in the amount of$3000, has been
received from Wayne and Jane Crosby and a donation matching that of Steve Guerber's $500 has been
received from Dr. Joe] Courtial and Joanne E. Courtai] for the project. Ron Baker is curreQtly completing
the editing of the manuscript and when it is print-ready and submitted to Caxton Printers it will be another
three months before it is finished. The estimation is for a completion date sometime in June of this year.
Archives Management: Ms. Baker reported that her goal for completing the archives has been met.
Also, the Ward Hooper posters are now displayed; two on the south wall of the museum and three on the
divider under the title "Eagle Images", along with a photograph and brief biography of Mr. Hooper.
The next training session for volunteers is scheduled for] 0 a.m., March], 2008, and will focus on the
preservation of historic photographs. At that time Ms. Baker will have procedural manuals available for
the volunteers. The final of the three training sessions will be scheduled sometime in the coming summer
and will address the handling of discreet collections.
New donations to the museum include scrapbooks from the Crosbys, some epehemera, and a Christmas
ornament. Laurie Baker emphasized that a Deed of Gift must be provided for each donation and that
loans cannot be accepted. She went over the Donation Review Form for the month of February and Nancy
Suiter moved and Betty Fisher seconded the motion to accept these donations. The motion passed.
A discussion followed in which Sharon Sharp told the Commission she is currently going through a
collection of 80 year's worth of objects from her father, Orville Jackson's, drugstore and may be finding
many things that might be donated to the museum in the future.
The whereabouts of two objects from Eagle's early history is still a mystery; the school bell from the first
school in Eagle, and the Oregon Trail marker that once stood on the Tate property at old Highway 44 and
Ballantyne Lane. Efforts are being made to find them. .
Commission Vacancy: Laurie Baker will write a letter for Weldon Fisher to sign confirming his
resignation from the Commission. Gwen Sears will take Kay Madary's seat.
NEW BUSINESS
Facilities Expansion: The Eagle Chamber of Commerce will be moving out of the space at the front of
the museum building on March 3, and it has been decided the museum can now use that part of the
building for the Curator's office, freeing the room she now occupies for storage space once again, thus
clearing the bathroom of extra tables, chairs, etc. While Ms. Baker regrets the loss of the $250 per month
income from renting the space to the Chamber, she will be very glad to have more working room. By
Ordinance 391, as of May, 2001, the entire building was deeded to the historical museum by the City of
Eagle.
Laurie Baker is considering asking Dan Friend to make silk screened banners to attach to the support
posts at the front of the building to further advertise its presence and Shari Sharp suggested asking the
proprietors of the barber shop for permission to use the west wall of their establishment as advertising
space as well. This wall is clearly visible from Eagle Road and by traffic moving east on old State Street.
Exhibit Construction: Joe Prin will be making three free-floating exhibit stands with removable
plexiglass tops and constructing a front porch addition to the Farm and Barn exhibit. He is said to be
looking forward especially to the latter.
Eagle Auto Fest: The Arts Commission will pay for the musicians who will appear in the gazebo for the
Auto Fest this year. These will be the only music at the show. Ms. Baker reported the museum is $9.80
in the hole for the paper supplied for the Auto Fest flyers. Jason Pierce suggested that businesses
specializing in auto-related merchandise should sponsor the show. Ms. Baker replied that obtaining that
sponsorship should be the responsibility of the show people themselves.
There being no further business before the Commission Betty Fisher moved and Gwen Sears seconded
the motion to adjourn. The motion passed and Jason Pierce declared the meeting adjourned at 7: 17 p.m.
