Minutes - 2008 - Historic Preservation Commission - 01/10/2008 - Regular THE EAGLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION MINUTES FROM THE MEETING OF; January 10, 2008 Call to Order; The meeting was called to order by chairman, Jason Pierce at 6:30 p.m. Roll Call and Introductions: Commission members in attendance were Jason Pierce, Betty Fisher and Nancy Suiter. Guests attending were Gwen Sears and Eagle city councilman, Steve Guerber. Laurie Baker, Curator, was also in attendance. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Approval of Minutes: Jason Pierce moved and Betty Fisher seconded the motion to approve the minutes of November 8, 2007. Laurie Baker amended the motion to include the starting time of the meeting which had been omitted. The motion was passed as amended. Curator's Report: Laurie Baker went over her written report with the Commission. She said attendance at the museum on December 1, the Chamber of Commerce's Country Christmas Day, was low but that the figures for overall attendance for the year 2007 were still higher than those for 2006. Ms. Baker reported that funds collected for the Arthur Hart book so far total only $2,080. The City Council, when asked, said they would not pick up any of the expenses associated with publishing the book and councilman, Mike Huffaker, when apprised of the low return in response to the Curator's letter seeking sponsorship, said the museum should give businesses one more chance to respond. The mayor's State of the City Address will include a mention of the problem of the lack of support for the history book. At this point, Steve Guerber made a donation of $500 toward the book and stated he felt the community should be supporting the project, not businesses. Ms. Baker asked if he would suggest another plea be made to the Chamber of Commerce. He replied he would ask the Chamber regarding this. Jason Pierce suggested Mr. Guerber add his name to the request to personalize it. Ms. Baker is currently editing the manuscript. She reported that Brandon Sprandling, a free-lance graphic designer in Portland, Oregon, has agreed to do the pre-press production of the manuscript for one- third less than the cost of having Caxton Printers do it. When asked how much more is needed to complete the project, she said $3,550, including everything. Also under unfmished business, Steve Guerber reported he has talked to Steve GOOo, the developer of the business building being constructed on the site of the old prune packing plant, regarding an historical marker to be placed in the lobby of the building when it is completed. Mr. Guho referred him to his interior decorator. Archives Management: The new west wall of the museum is finished and the Eagle Island display is now completed. In addition newspaper clippings have been copied onto acid-free paper and filed. The Hooper posters have yet to be hung. Ms. Baker said the second training session for the volunteers is to be scheduled on a Saturday in February. The training this time will be on photo processing. Accessions: The Curator reported her goal regarding Deed of Gift documentation has been reached. The calendar year 2007 has been cleared. She mentioned some art supplies needed for the museum have been purchased from local retailers. Nancy Suiter suggested in the future she might consider comparing prices at Quality Art which sometimes offers significant savings on these items. Approval of Expenses: Jason Pierce moved and Betty Fisher seconded the motion to approve the expenses. The motion passed. Commission Vacancies: The Commission's rule on attendance at meetings stipulates that missing three consecutive meetings will result in automatic removal from the Commission. Weldon Fisher has now missed six meetings due to illness. Laurie Baker said she is certain he will soon offer to retire and that will leave two positions unfilled. Jason Pierce said he thinks Shari Sharp may be willing to fill one vacancy. It is hoped Gwen Sears will fill the other. NEW BUSINESS Eagle History Booklets: Small, two to four page booklets, each addressing one aspect of Eagle's history, have been available for purchase in the past. At $2.50 each, they have been popular and Laurie Baker suggested she could extract information from her research for exhibits and make new booklets available to museum visitors. All agreed this was a good idea and added placement in additional locations in Eagle might be considered as well. Donation Review Forms: These forms are available to Commission members to view the donations made to the museum in the time period between Commission meetings. Adjournment: There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:55 p.m. . ~e.~IIY su~m.. itt:d,( " . f) 'J~/1M.-/~~ Na4 :uiter,~retary Approved on Jason Pierce, Chainnan d ~~ .:It ~ ......-:;.~;.~........ .........
