Minutes - 2005 - Historic Preservation Commission - 09/14/2005 - Regular
THE EAGLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES FROM THE MEETING OF:
September 14, 2005
The meeting was called to order at 9: 15 a.m. by Chairman Diane Scott. Commission members
attending were: Diane Scott, Betty Fisher, and Weldon Fisher. Also attending were Larry
Walker and Geneva Trent.
Diane submitted receipts for books, an easel, ink cartridges, and other office supplies. Betty
moved that the expenses be approved for payment, Weldon seconded the motion, and the
motion passed.
Diane reported that the new reception desk is here, but the sides were not built as discussed.
Diane has talked to Roland Smith-Gloria about it, and will meet with him later to resolve the
issue.
Diane asked Geneva to report on the CLG grant; Geneva explained that she is writing it up as
discussed at last month's meeting but in discussing it with Ann Swanson was asked to e-mail
her draft to Ann, and since we do not yet have internet connection at the museum Geneva is
doing it at home. She will bring it in when complete and get copies to all Commission
members.
The Old Car & Tractor Show at the Museum is planned for October I. Diane needs help
putting out flyers, both Betty and Weldon said they would help. Diane explained that the
woman who had wanted to do a plein air art exhibit wants to do it at the library instead of the
museum, so Diane suggested that she work with the library instead.
The hours of operation for the museum was discussed, Diane wants to keep it open from
II :00 am through 4:00 pm through the winter. Weldon would like to keep these hours
through Christmas and then reassess the need to keep the museum open that much. Not action
was taken on the matter.
It was noted that the amount of time the museum stays open depends on volunteers, and Diane
asked Geneva to present her ideas on a volunteer program. Geneva explained that the research
she has been doing says that before even asking for people to volunteer, the group must first
know and specify why they want volunteers, and then design specific volunteer assignments.
Weldon asked about recruiting volunteers from the High School, and Betty asked about
training volunteers. Geneva will establish a volunteer program at the museum which includes
training volunteers.
New exhibits were discussed: Weldon wants a display that is changed monthly, one idea
suggested was to do a temporary display in December of how Christmas trees were decorated
in the past in this area. Diane reported on her contact person who has barnwood. This lady
will donate boards and shingles to us if we put a plaque on the exhibit with her husband's
name on it, and she will dismantle and store them until we are ready for them. Weldon noted
that he is still trying to contact Mike Chase about getting old boards from him.

Diane told about gathering information about a potential stagecoach exhibit, and that Philip
Fry was in the museum yesterday and offered a small replica of a stage coach that we could
use. She foresees Geneva putting together a display using that stage coach in a diorama
exhibit with appropriate interpretation. Weldon noted that he saw in our files a schedule of
when stage coaches left Boise, and Larry Walker volunteered to bring in information he has
compiled about stage roads and stage coaches. Geneva told her plans to have Fred Fritchman
come in and give us ideas on improving the exhibits, and will let the members know when so
they can attend.
Diane said that the Commission is short one member, and nominated Phyllis Schlador, who
has said she would like to serve on the Commission and has volunteered on occasion at the
Museum. Weldon seconded the motion, and it passed.
Other items: It was noted that the minutes of the meeting of August 10, 2005, were not put on
the agenda but needed to be approved. Diane moved that they be approved as written, Weldon
seconded the motion, and motion passed.
It was also noted that the City Council wants a daily visitor count recorded; Geneva will put
out a new book for volunteers to sign each day they serve and how many hours they donate,
and ask them to also record how many visitors come to the museum while they are here.
Geneva was also asked to get a new Guest Book for visitors to sign that has room for their
names, addresses, and phone numbers.
Weldon also reported that he had located two potential sites of the Goodale Cut-off (of the
Oregon Trail) for posting historic site signs, and he wants Steve Guerber to come look at them
with us.
There being no other business, Weldon moved to adjourn, Betty seconded, and Diane
adjourned the meeting at 10:05 am.
Respectfully submitted,
